Terms of Service
Last updated: 10 June 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Solar Sentry. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms. Read them carefully.
Note for review: Solar Sentry is currently operated by Darren Brost as a sole proprietorship. If we incorporate or register a trade name, this document will be updated to name the new entity.
1. Who we are
"Solar Sentry," "we," "us," or "our" refers to the service operated by Darren Brost, a sole proprietor based at 222 Panamount Landing NW, Calgary, Alberta T3K 0H7, Canada. "You" refers to the person creating an account or using the service.
2. The service
Solar Sentry is a residential solar-monitoring service for APsystems microinverter installations. It connects to APsystems' OpenAPI on your behalf, checks system status on a schedule, detects per-panel anomalies, sends alerts and daily summary emails, and renders production charts against local weather data.
The service depends on third-party systems we do not control: APsystems' OpenAPI, AWS, Stripe, Open-Meteo, and your email provider. Our ability to deliver any specific feature depends on those systems being available and behaving as expected.
3. Your account
To use the service, you create an account with your email address and a password. You're responsible for keeping your password secure and for everything that happens under your account. If you suspect your account has been accessed without your permission, change your password and contact legal@solarsentry.ca immediately.
You must be at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction) to use the service. You agree that the information you provide is accurate and that you have the right to connect the APsystems system you're monitoring (i.e., you're the owner, or have the owner's permission).
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Scrape, crawl, or automate access to the site in ways that aren't supported by the public API.
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract source code from the service.
- Use the service to attack, probe, or interfere with anyone else's infrastructure.
- Use the service to break any law or violate someone else's rights.
- Resell or rebrand the service without our written permission.
- Share your account credentials with people outside your household.
We may suspend or terminate your account if you do any of the above. If your behavior caused us material damage, we may also seek to recover that damage.
5. Free trial
New accounts receive a 7-day free trial automatically on first sign-in. No credit card is required to start the trial. We may revoke the trial at any time, without notice, if we observe abuse (e.g., creating multiple accounts to chain trials together). The trial ends 7 days after it begins; if you don't subscribe to a paid plan before then, your access to monitored features is paused until you do.
6. Subscriptions, payments, and refunds
6.1 Pricing
Paid subscriptions are offered in three tiers (currently CAD$5.99/month, CAD$32.99/6 months, CAD$59.99/year). Pricing is shown on the subscribe page and may change with notice; existing subscribers continue at their current rate until renewal.
6.2 Billing
Payments are processed by Stripe (stripe.com). By subscribing, you authorize us, via Stripe, to charge the card you provide for the term you've selected, and to renew the subscription automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel beforehand.
6.3 Cancellation
You can cancel anytime from /account/subscription or from the Stripe billing portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current paid period — you keep access until then, but the subscription does not renew.
6.4 Refunds
6.5 Taxes
Prices shown do not include taxes. If we're required to collect sales tax, GST, HST, or VAT in your jurisdiction, that tax will be added at checkout or on your invoice.
7. Service availability
Specifically, we do not warrant that:
- Every alert will reach you (emails can be delayed, blocked, or eaten by spam filters; if your inbox is full, we can't deliver).
- Status checks will run on a precise schedule (network and API hiccups can delay them).
- Weather data will be accurate or available (Open-Meteo is a third-party service).
- Every panel anomaly will be detected (we detect what APsystems reports; if APsystems doesn't see it, we can't see it).
We will make commercially reasonable efforts to keep the service running and to fix problems when they arise.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or related to the service — whether in contract, tort, or any other theory — is limited to the total amount you've paid us in subscription fees in the 12 months immediately preceding the event that gave rise to the claim.
We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:
- Lost solar production, lost feed-in-tariff revenue, or lost savings.
- Damage to your solar system, panels, inverters, or other equipment.
- Costs of replacement equipment, repairs, or service calls.
- Lost data or lost business.
These limitations apply even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages.
9. Your data
You retain all ownership of the data your solar system produces and any other information you give us. By using the service, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to process your data solely for the purpose of providing and improving the service.
See our Privacy Policy for details on what we collect, who we share it with, and how to access, correct, or delete your data.
10. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the service in violation of these Terms, or your infringement of any third-party right.
11. Termination
You can close your account at any time by emailing legal@solarsentry.ca from your account email. We can suspend or terminate your account for material breach of these Terms, abusive behavior, non-payment after a reasonable grace period, or if we're required to by law.
Sections that should reasonably survive termination — including ownership of your data, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law — survive termination.
12. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable in Alberta, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles. Any dispute arising out of or related to these Terms or the service will be resolved in the courts located in Calgary, Alberta, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll email the account address you've registered at least 14 days before the changes take effect. Continued use of the service after the changes take effect counts as acceptance of the updated Terms. If you don't agree, your remedy is to cancel and stop using the service.
14. Miscellaneous
Severability: If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
No waiver: If we don't enforce a right or provision in these Terms, that doesn't waive our right to enforce it later.
Entire agreement: These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us about the service. They supersede any prior agreements.
Assignment: You may not assign your rights under these Terms without our written permission. We may assign our rights (e.g., in the event of a sale of the business) without notice.
